Origin: Mata Leão or Lion Killer, is Portuguese for the submission more commonly known as the rear-naked choke. The technique involves applying a choke from behind by using one arm to control the opponent's head and the other to apply pressure to the carotid arteries. A foundational submission learned by newly minted white belts and perfected by UFC champions, the technique forces the opponent to tap out or quickly lose consciousness.
